DIPLOHACK Bratislava

On April 22-23, the Netherlands Embassy in Bratislava, Impact Hub Bratislava, Solved.fi and the Slovak Ministry of Economic Affairs will organise a free hackathon, aiming to generate new ideas regarding transparency in Europe. Researchers, diplomats, developers, journalists, social entrepreneurs, designers and active citizens will join forces. Within a weekend, they will start to develop new business ideas, services and tools to the benefit of a more accessible and open European decision-making for all.

DiploHack Bratislava is part of a series of hackathons organised all around Europe in the context of the Netherlands’ EU Presidency during the first semester of 2016, in response to a call by Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders. He challenged EU citizens to “shine a light on the black box of Brussels”. With support of the Slovak Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Netherlands Embassy cooperates with Impact Hub Bratislava and Solved.fi to bring together creative minds, active citizens and experts in a co-creation workshop, in order to produce and prototype innovative initiatives in the fields of open data and transparency.

Open data has the potential to unleash innovation and transform every sector of the economy and society. Active citizens can play a critical role in ensuring that stakeholders capture the full value of information. In the context of current European developments, participatory and co-creative processes may become catalysts for ideas tackling the challenging issues we face. How can we use open data in order to enable value creation, manage risks and engage key stakeholders? In what way can we make EU decision-making more transparent?

The DiploHack will be organised within the framework of the following challenges, of which participants can pick one:

• How can Start-Ups & SMEs use EU open data for practical business applications?
• How can active citizens utilise Open Data to improve quality of life in the EU?

Prizes

1. Besides winning a free trip to Amsterdam in June to pitch your solution in front of an international jury at the Transparency Camp Europe, the winning team will also win 5 hours of business consultancy, provided by our partner Solved.fi.2. The second team will win a financial prize of €600, as well as 5 hours of business consultancy support by our partner Solved.
